Dolomiti Superski - Sustainability

The beautiful Dolomites are an ecosystem to be respected and enhanced in an economic, ecological and social sense.

DS Responsibility

With DS Responsibility, we want to create a well-defined and structured sustainability programme that takes into account the complexity of the Dolomiti Superski system and the different needs of the ski areas, reinforcing the strategic positioning in the direction of sustainability. Every production process, from the operation of the lifts, to the preparation of the slopes, trails and tracks, to the issuing of tickets etc., is optimised according to a credible logic of sustainability.
Dolomiti Superski wants to be a driving force and an example for the entire chain, for the sustainable development of the area.

The sustainability project „DS Responsibility“, launched in 2018, aims to develop strategies that reduce the destination’s carbon footprint.
A sustainable and responsible approach to plant engineering has become increasingly important, with a focus on processes, technologies, and the use of resources that are as environmentally friendly as possible.
Sustainability Rangers are present in all 12 Dolomiti Superski and Supersummer resorts. Their role is to promote and safeguard a culture of ecological, social, and economic sustainability.
The way of living and travelling has changed, but the environment, biodiversity and local culture are the raw material without which tourism is doomed to die.

Strengthening our knowledge for the future – with the Dolomiti Superski Academy

The Dolomiti Superski Academy is much more than a training programme– it is a dedicated learning platform for sustainable development in alpine tourism. Developed in close cooperation with the Terra Academy, this innovative professional development format is designed to equip employees with the skills needed to actively integrate sustainability into their daily work.

What makes it unique is the combination of flexible online learning modules with best practices drawn directly from the Dolomiti Superski system. This approach fosters a dynamic exchange between theory and practice, as well as among the people who bring Dolomiti Superski to life every day. Participants not only gain a deeper understanding of sustainability, but also learn how to translate these principles into concrete actions within their own professional environment. The ultimate goal is to empower all stakeholders to actively contribute to the sustainable development of the region – whether through resource-efficient operations, mindful communication, or by promoting a respectful interaction with both nature and guests.

The training program forms an integral part of the broader sustainability initiative DS Responsibility, which has been in place since 2018 and is continuously evolving.

Recognition for sustainable commitment

Have you seen this logo and wondered what it represents?

The label recognizes companies within the destination that invest in training their employees on sustainability.
The Dolomites are a truly unique ecosystem that deserves to be preserved and valued from ecological, economic, and social perspectives. Through the Dolomiti Superski – Responsibility programme, we are committed to building a solid and credible sustainability strategy that addresses the region’s challenges and promotes responsible development for the future.
At the heart of this initiative lies the Dolomiti Superski Academy, created in collaboration with Terra Academy. It provides employees with practical and forward-looking training on the three pillars of sustainability – environmental, social, and economic – with a special focus on the specific context of alpine tourism.
The label is not a certification, but rather a sign of commitment: it is awarded to companies in which at least 50% of employees have successfully completed the Dolomiti Superski Academy training. It stands as tangible proof of their dedication to addressing today’s challenges responsibly – protecting the environment, promoting local culture, and contributing to the sustainable future of the Dolomites.

How does Dolomiti Superski contribute to sustainability?

Over time, technology has made great strides. Also in terms of eco-sustainability. The super-tech cannons have a low energy consumption of 20 kw. They also run at 1500 rpm, whereas in the 1980s they needed 3000 rpm, so today they are quieter.
Snowmaking also serves to provide work for ski instructors, hoteliers, restaurants and all those involved in the Dolomiti Superski.
Natural snow would never be enough for a winter season, they have a larger crystal than technical snow and therefore a much shorter duration.
Technical snow is just water that comes out of a small hole at a very high pressure, pulverises and with the cold turns into crystals. No chemicals are used.
The water used is then returned to the ground as the real snow melts.

To ensure that Plan de Corones continues to meet the expectations of residents, visitors, and, above all, the needs of nature, Funivie San Vigilio Spa is switching to a cleaner fuel: in the future, its fleet will run on GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) Fuel Alpin instead of diesel. After introducing Italy’s first hybrid snow groomer in 2014, the company is now the country’s first cableway operator to adopt this innovative fuel.

The fleet consists of 11 snow groomers (plus one backup), until now mostly powered by diesel. By transitioning to GTL Fuel Alpin, Funivie San Vigilio demonstrates that cleaner, more responsible energy solutions can form the foundation for a sustainable future.

Key benefits of GTL Fuel Alpin

  • Cleaner combustion compared to conventional diesel
  • Significant reduction of emissions (NOx, PM, CO, HC)
  • Reliable performance even at -30 °C, without engine modifications
  • Non-toxic, odorless, biodegradable, and safe to handle
  • Quieter, smoother combustion in some engines
  • Improved ignition thanks to a higher cetane number (74–80)

Other ski areas are also adopting advanced fuels: since the 2023/24 winter season, Carezza has been using HVO fuel based on hydrogenated vegetable oils, cutting CO₂ emissions from snow groomers by 60–90%.

RECYCLE YOUR BOOTS – give your old ski boots a second life

We often think that, as individuals, our contribution is not enough to make a real difference. But that’s not true. As a lover of the snowy world and a leading company in the sector, Tecnica Group with its brands Tecnica and Nordica – has launched a concrete project to protect and preserve the environment, with a special focus on the mountains we deeply belong to. Dolomiti Superski shares the same commitment to the Dolomites and the entire Alpine ecosystem. That’s why it has decided to join the circular economy initiative Recycle Your Boots, a project that marks an important step towards positive change.
Giving your used alpine ski boots a new life is simple: just bring them – no matter the brand – to one of the Recycle Your Boots collection points within the Dolomiti Superski area.

Tecnica Group will take care of the rest. All collected ski boots are carefully analyzed following strict protocols: those still suitable for use are reintroduced to the market as second-hand products through social inclusion projects, while those no longer usable are recycled. Tecnica Group has developed the first-ever recycling system for ski boots: up to 85% of the materials can be transformed into new resources used to produce new boots, skis, and footwear.
Since the launch of the program, 50,000 pairs of ski boots have already been converted into second-generation raw materials, resulting in a total saving of around 750 tons of CO₂.
