The “Ra Pegna” via ferrata was created in partnership with the Mountain Guides of Cortina to enrich and complete the area’s summer excursion options, and to offer the many hikers who visit the site an easy climb that covers a short distance and ensures an interesting scenic experience.

The trail, which is linked to the “Ra Bujela” via ferrata, might also be included in a fascinating circular route that starts at the Duca d'Aosta refuge. Like the nearby “Ra Bujela” via ferrata, the equipped “Ra Pegna” trail is an excellent alternative in unstable weather that prevents visitors from following other more challenging paths in the area (Olivieri via ferrata to Punta Anna, the via ferrata to Tofana di Mezzo, Olivieri equipped path, etc.). Moreover, this itinerary has been designed taking into account the needs of first timers on an equipped trail. It is a sort of “practice field” even for young users (families).

The route

From the Duca d'Aosta refuge the trail crosses the final section of the Schuss ski slope (about 250 m) as a short path that leads to the starting point of the via ferrata. The equipped ascent exploits the most accessible areas of the wall, rapidly reaching the top. From the peak a convenient 4 m long ladder enables hikers to reach the path that winds its way to the valley or to the Pomedes refuge, which is located slightly upwards.

Environmentally friendly features

The rocky monoliths “Ra Pegna” and “Ra Bujela” are situated in the heart of the Dolomites and UNESCO heritage, in the Tofane mountain range, at the foot of Punta Anna and the Pomedes tower. The rocky formation is mostly made up of Main Dolomite rock and dates back to the Triassic.

The equipped trails, which have been created with minor earth movements and without cutting trees, have a very low environmental impact. They are practically invisible and can be easily removed to allow complete recovery of the sites.
