Ascent to Le Ciaval at Sas dla Crusc / Holy Cross
- Alta Badia
The tour at the border of the Fanes – Senes – Braies natural park is among the most beautiful hikes in the Dolomites. Unspoilt nature, vertical cliff faces that are tinged white by the sun's rays with in the morning and red in the evening, the unique and mysterious landscape of the Alpe di Fanes Alpine pastures, the typical flora of the Dolomites, the marmots and chamois on the rocks... this hike is a truly unforgettable experience.
Route: Take the Santa Croce and La Crusc chairlifts up from Badia to Santa Croce (2,045 m). Just a few minutes' walk from the top station of the La Crusc chairlift, you reach the pilgrimage church of La Crusc/Santa Croce (2,045 m), right at the foot of the Sas dla Crusc/Sasso di Santa Croce Mountain. To the left of the church, set off on trail no. 7, which first heads east and then south through pine forest and scree until you start to climb up the rocks. The partly cable-secured trails climbs right up through the magnificent copper-coloured cliffs to the Ju dla Crusc pass (2,598 m) (walking time: 1 hour 50 minutes). Now continue northwards along the ridge on trail no. 7B to the highest point of the hike at L'Ćiaval (2,906 m) (walking time: 1 hour). Here you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the mountains of the Dolomites and the wonderful Alpine pasture scenery of the Alpe di Fanes.
You can return the same way or from the Ju dla Crusc follow trail no. 7 eastwards towards Fanes. After 200 m, bear right and continue on trail no. 12B towards the Forcela Medesc passage (2,529 m). From the passage you begin your descent on trail no. 12, heading west through the scree fields of the Val de Medesc. After the first quite steep section, the trail then continues at a gentler gradient. When you arrive at the end of the valley, you have a gorgeus view of the village of La Villa, which nestles amid green meadows. The trail then continues through forests, fields and pastureland, past farms and hamlets to La Villa.
