The area around the Dolomites is a cradle for history and culture dating back millennia. The cultural expressions derived from this history are reflected throughout the territory and kept alive by the older generations that live there. The Dolomite valleys underwent at least 7,000 years of colonization, so they’ve become a culturally diverse melting pot.
In 15 B.C. the Dolomites and their people became a part of the Roman Empire; their influence was significant, as witnessed in the endurance of the local Rhaeto- Roman language dialect, Ladino.
Between March 1915 and October 1917, one of the most painful and incredible pages of history was written here. During the First World War, also known as "The Great War", these mountains witnessed the struggle between Italian and Austrian troops during an extensive strategic conflict. Today throughout the territory you can still visit places that bear visible signs left over from those battles.

The intense activity carried out by the Ladin Cultural Institute has been extremely important in safeguarding and recovering expressions of the linguistic, cultural and artistic heritage of the local Ladin population. This activity has included both the promotion of the teaching of the Ladin language in local schools and additions to the collections of the "Museo Ladin de Fascia". In over 600 sq.m of exhibition space, as well as hosting different ethnographic collections, the museum provides visitors with the opportunity to watch various themed films, using a multimedia support system which extends throughout the museum.
