Dolomites – The most beautiful mountains in the world

...this is what most people who have been in the presence of these gigantic rock formations say. Compared to other mountains: brighter, more colorful, more monumental, and seeming to be architecturally inspired. Formed 200,000 years ago out of the primeval ocean, today they reach 3,000 metres into the sky. Déodat de Dolomieu (1750-1801) discovered and defined the unique composition of the stone, giving the mountains their name. From June 26th 2009 they are a UNESCO - Natural world Heritage. A winter sports setting that could not be more impressive.

Sextner Dolomiten - Alta Pusteria holiday area

In the Sextner Dolomiten - Alta Pusteria, winter reveals its most pleasant face. At an altitude of between 1,150 and 1,310 m (3,450 and 3,930 ft) and situated on the southern slopes of the Alps, the region is able to guarantee the best that winter holidays can offer: lots of snow and sun.

Beautiful works of art

The composer Gustav Mahler came here on summer holidays while emperors and kings came “to take the cure”. As a holiday destination, the Alta Pusteria can look back on a long history. Today, visitors may not only re-experience the golden days of the fin de siècle, a rich programme of cultural events awaits them as well. The Grand Hotel in Dobbiaco, once a high-society haunt, today serves as an elegant venue hosting a variety of cultural activities. A visit to the Tourism Museum, located in the Wassermann House at Villabassa, reveals a wealth of artefacts witnessing to historical attractions from the days of spa tourism, from nostalgic bathing cabins to the biography of the legendary hotelier Emma Hellenstainer.

Villages in Sextner Dolomiten

With its unique mountain scenery, Sesto has stolen the heart of many visitors. However, you should not judge the village on its appearance alone – you would be missing quite a lot if you did!

This is where you can really experience the winter landscape – in every conceivable way. Whether you are skiing or snowboarding in the Dolomiti di Sesto-Alta Pusteria ski resort, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, snow-shoe walking, riding on a horse-drawn sleigh or simply walking – winter here is never boring.

San Candido lies in a spectacular position at the center of the Dolomites Natural Park Sesto, an ideal destination for families surrounded by soaring peaks, deep lakes, marshes and bizarre mountainous land masses enshrouded in myths and legends for centuries.

This unique landscape offers unique interest and amusement for the young and old alike all year round, and in terms of variety fears no comparison with any Alpine area at all. You will inevitably feel at home here.

Dobbiaco is directly situated at the entrance of the wild and romantic Landro Valley, which offers breath taking views to the famous ‘Three Peaks’. Therefore it gets its apt name – the ‘town of the Three Peaks’. It is a tourist town with 100 years of tourism tradition and an extensive variety of holiday offers.

Its geographical vicinity to the famous Dolomite peaks, the healthy climate and its full cultural diversity are, besides the sporting activities, the main reasons, why Dobbiaco is one of the most popular holiday locations in South Tyrol.

If you attach great importance to tradition and customs, if you know how to appreciate culture and history and you are interested in the beauty of winter and summer mountain landscapes as well as sports, then Villabassa is the place you are looking for.

Enter a world far from everyday life, in which customs and traditions have not changed for centuries. The lake in the valley considered the most beautiful lake of the Dolomites. It is also called the „Pearl of the Dolomites“ because of its particular charm. During the summer months the lake in fact shimmers like a jewel in several shades of green and blue, whereas in the winter months it is covered with snow and ice.

One of the most beautiful landscapes of the northern Dolomites is the high plateau Prato Piazza with its vast meadows and its inviting huts and rifugios. This charming paradise on 2000 m sealevel offers tranquility and peace.
